The Stress Zone

Most times when we think of stress we think of it as being out in the environment: our boss, finances or interpersonal relationships. While this is true stress also has a very profound and lasting effect on our bodies and minds.

Did you know we have a stress regulating feedback system? It's called the HPA axis (Hypothalamus, Pituitary & Adrenals) and it works brilliantly if allowed to regenerate and rebalance. Two of these glands: Hypothalamus and Pituitary are in our brain while the Adrenals of course - the tiny grape-size pyramids that sit atop the kidneys - are at the bottom of our back rib cage. When stimulated they produce the key hormones for food, sex, safety and survival.

Adrenals being the crux of this axis are the ones that are most likely to become exhausted by the constant stress of our frenetic modern lives where we often do not relax long enough or have good nourishment to regain harmony.

Modifying our lifestyle by letting go of our work with a good long walk or a restful timeout  are good things to do regularly.   In addition good nutrition with specific herbs that target the HPA axis and particularly those precious tiny powerhouses, the adrenals would be strongly advised.
On another level lightening our thoughts with some good energy practice like chi kung or meditation and energy work could be very helpful in the long run.
