Detoxification

Detoxification: A New Spin on an Old Topic
By John Heinerman, Ph.D.

"Detoxification" in alternative health circles has generally come to mean the removal of free-floating toxins and potentially harmful chemicals which may have accumulated within body tissue and organs, over an extended period of time. Today such detoxification efforts, either done alone or under the supervision of a qualified health care counselor, usually tend to target specific organs such as the stomach, liver, and colon. While there are different programs that can include a myriad of things to do or take, the average "detox" generally lasts no more than three days at a time and typically consists of mild fiber-foods, cleansing juices, mucilage herbs, and fortifying nutrients.

Often times, fasting is routinely employed to help make the job more thorough. It is one of the oldest known methods of cleansing the system, though anciently it was usually done for religious purifications of some kind. Such a fast is generally conducted over the weekend when there is less expenditure of physical energy and normally lasts no longer than three days.

Common detoxification involves two very distinct phases, traditionally referred to as Phase I and Phase II. In the first phase, the body produces numerous isoenzymes (different forms of an enzyme) which transform toxins and chemicals into intermediates, which are usually different than their original compounds. These can be highly reactive and even more toxic than the materials they came from. At this point, another enzyme driven reaction kicks in known as conjugation, in which additional molecules are added to the biotransformed intermediates. This further increases their water solubility to make elimination via urine or bile much easier.

Ideally, this is the way detoxification should work. The stomach, liver, and colon are the three primary organs most often targeted for managed house cleaning. The stomach is where digestion takes place, the liver is where important enzymes are produced, and the colon, as well as the urinary tract, are the places out of which the detoxified garbage is eventually dumped. Realistically, though, impairment of this two-phase cleansing process is, quite often, due to dysfunctions frequently found in any one or several of these major organ systems.

In olden times, detoxification or "physical spring cleaning" (as it used to be known by) was undertaken every year for entirely different reasons. It was believed by the common folk that a long winter's repast of meat, bread, and sweets with very little vegetables, tended to make the blood quite thick, resulting in very sluggish circulation and general feeling of weariness and lassitude. Thus, with the arrival of spring, an earnest search was commenced for edible greens and nourishing roots which would remove this sludge and expedite blood flow.

The primary focus then was on cleaning the blood and ought to be our primary goal today as well. Blood is the river of life that surges within us. It transports nearly everything that must be carried from one place to another within the body. Anciently, blood was considered to be magical, a special elixir that held the mystical force of life for when it drained from the life, life departed as well. Today, blood retains an exalted position in the life-saving profession of medicine: Clinicians examine it more often than any other living tissue when trying to determine the cause of disease in their patients. The condition of the blood is considered a reliable gauge in determining overall health of the body.

Restocking the intestinal system with good bowel cleaning and immune system boosting bacteria (e.g. L. Salivarius ) is the best place to begin the process of eliminating toxins safely while establishing a sound foundation for health. Some people try to clean the liver or lymphatic system without first cleaning the colon. However this can result in the recirculation of toxins through the portal vein, that goes from the colon back into the liver, if the colon is clogged.

Another step to improved detoxification would be through increased hydration which would allow more nutrients into the cells while flushing out acidic toxic waster products.  The best tool for this would be the Vitalizer Plus hexagonal water appliance.  This is a very practical and fun appliance that vitalizes your water with a vortex, infra-red frequencies and  specific ionic minerals that help stabilize this  powerful and revitalizing water.

Further to help remove heavy metals and other toxinx from your system there's Modifilan Brown Seaweed Extract or Fulvic Zeolite.

Anyways there's great products available for deep purification these days and if you bolster that with eating pure nutritious foods, drinking clean water, breathing fresh air and exercise you will help maintain pure blood and tissues for a more vibrant life.

A good book on detoxification is The Tao of Detox by Daniel Reid
